Once again I would love to introduce you with the latest task I am performing as part of my ICT studies at the master's degree.
Therefore, today I am going to tell you about assessment with Rubric and how to create your own Rubric. To finish with I will show the Rubric I have create as to evaluate my own Habitat and ecosystem project.
A Rubric is a tool develop by the teacher not only as a mean to evaluate his or her students but also to help the student assess his or her learning. And in this"assessment FOR learning" and not in the traditional "assessment TO learning" is where I believe resides the beauty of a Rubric.
There are a lot of student that are not good at memorizing content but they are still hard workers, if you assign a task to this students they will show their best at fulfilling their assignments. But at this point some teacher find difficulties in evaluating, should we only evaluate the task outcome? and if not, what do we really evaluate from the task?.
Well, when you design a task for your students you always have to bare in mind what your students do already know. From than point on, you scaffold the content giving them rational and guided instructions as to help your students to achieve the goals you want them to reach. In this sense the rubric will therefore help your students with their own assessment by knowing which are the steps to follow to reach learning.
Here are some of the main characteristic you will have to remember according to the education reform glossary:
1º The educational purpose of an assignment, the rationale behind it, or how it connects to larger concepts or themes in a course.
2º The specific criteria or learning objectives that students must show proficiency in to successfully complete an assignment or meet expected standards. An oral -presentation rubric, for example, will establish the criteria-- e.g., speak clearly, make eye contact, or include a description of the main characters, setting, and plot --on which students will be graded.
3º The specific quality standards the teacher will use when evaluating, scoring, or grading an assignment. For example, if the teacher is grading an assignment on a scale of 1 to 4, the rubric may detail what students need to do or demonstrate to earn a 1, 2,3 or 4. Other rubrics will use descriptive language--does not meet, partially meets, meets, or exceeds the standard, for example--instead of a numerical score.

Finally, I would like to tell you about the site I have used to create my rubric, QUICK RUBRIC. This site is quick, intuitive and easy to create a rubric once you already know the topics you are going to evaluate and how to create a rubric.
If you feel you need some help, advice or to use rubrics from somebody else as to get used of how creating you own valuable rubric I recommend that you use RUBISTAR. In Rubistar you will find a bank of rubrics according to the kind of project you are working with, the subject or the grade; what it's more, you can also contribute with your own rubrics to the bank.
